Go on. Embrace Your Inner Geek!

I have some quick questions, Bits and Bramblers…are any of you, by any chance, big fans of Star Wars? Or Star Trek? Or Harry Potter? Are you crazy about vampires, or do you own every album by a certain band? Are you maybe a big fan of…well, one of the billions of things that make this world awesome?

Let me give you a hint—these are all yes or no questions. Not “Yeah, but I haven’t read/watched/listened to it in awhile,” or “Yeah, but I’m not like…a geek about it, or anything.” That is the wrong answer. Especially today…because July 13th is Embrace Your Inner Geekiness Day!

So…what’s the best way to celebrate? I’m not really sure. I mean, clearly, all celebrations should involve cake, but…other than that? I’m not sure. I think the title of the day is sort of self-explanatory, really…just embrace your inner geek! Watch your favorite movie, reread your favorite book, listen to your favorite album…even if you’ve done it a gagillion times before!

And in true geek fashion…pass it on! Tell your friends how much you geek out over certain things, and maybe they’ll start geeking out over them too! (Case in point: m my geeky secret, Bits and Bramblers. is that I’m a HUGE fan of the old show, Mystery Science Theater 3000. I don’t know what it is about robot puppets making fun of terrible movies, but it makes me laugh every time. And now I’ve gotten one of my friends hooked, too! Soooooo many YouTube videos and DVDS!)

But most of all, just celebrate being a geek. Remember…there’s nothing wrong with being geeky. It’s a good , really, so…why not make it an everyday thing?! Be as geeky as you want to be…and be PROUD OF IT! Follow the lead of the Vlog Brothers…and become a NERDFIGHTER!

Everything is Better with Bunnies…

Summer is a busy time, Bits and Bramblers. And as much as you’d like to sit down and watch a movie, some days you just don’t have the time.

That’s where the bunnies come in. Because what movie wouldn’t be better if it were way shorter—let’s say, 30 seconds max—and had a cast of animated bunnies?

The answer is…pretty much everything. Everything would be better with snarky animated bunnies. Don’t believe me? You can catch the 30 Second Bunnies on the Starz network, or watch them at Angry Alien Productions. The bunnies have covered a tons of movies, from Gone With the Wind to Twilight. And the best part is, they take less than a minute to watch. And they’re made of awesome.

If you’re still not convinced, I’ve got three words for you. Bunny. Star. Wars.

You’re welcome…

Read “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” RIGHT NOW!

Now…usually when I say “READ THIS NOW” it means the book is so good you should drop everything and READ IT NOW. Now, don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not saying that The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner isn’t good…I’m telling you that you can literally read it right now.

I know it sounds like a joke—I tell you that it’s available free online, you click the link, and boom. Not only is there no ebook, you’re now at some crazy spyware-ridden virus-filled site.

But it’s for real, honest. Stephenie Meyer wanted to give a gift to her fans (and I think we can all agree it’s a pretty awesome one.) You can read the entire book for free at Breetanner.com, from now until July 5th. So, seriously…GO READ IT NOW!

But if you wanted to go get some snacks first, that would be fine, too.

And remember, it’ll only be available until July 5th. But I’m guessing most Twilight fans will have the book read before June 30thright?

Just When You Thought It Was Safe to MAKE WAVES…

Thirty-five years ago this summer, hardly anyone wanted to go swimming. Not in the ocean, not in lakes, or ponds—maybe not even in pools, even though it was…you know, hot outside. It had a lot to do with one of the biggest movie in the summer of 1975, Jaws. After people saw it, they were scared that if they went into the water, A GIANT BLOODTHIRSTY SHARK WOULD EAT THEM.

Not only was Jaws one of the biggest movies of 1975, it’s one of the biggest movies ever. Seriously…even if you haven’t seen the movie, chances are you know something about it—you’ve heard the theme, or some of the famous lines. You might have even seen some of the, like…eight million sequels, including one that was in old-school 3D (and is maybe one of the cheesiest movies ever. They might tell you “the third dimension is terror,” but trust me…the third dimension is cheese.)

If you haven’t seen the movie, though (and you aren’t really planning on swimming—especially in the ocean—for the next, oh…month or so,) then you should totally grab some popcorn and celebrate the movie’s 35th anniversary by watching it this summer. You can even read the book that the movie was based on, just to compare the two (just FYI, has 311 pages …which only leaves 689 pages to read before you get your $8 Target gift card!)

But I have to warn you…even the library isn’t safe from sharks. Of course, our shark isn’t really bloodthirsty. He just has a really cool eye patch, and got really tired of waiting to sign up for the Summer Library Program (which you’ve already done, right? Right?!)

Grab Your Popcorn: MAKE WAVES EDITION!

One of the best things about summer (other than the Summer Library Program…but you’ve already signed up for that, right? RIGHT?!) are the big summer movies. Some of them have been out for a few weeks (you’ve seen Iron Man 2, right? RIGHT?!) Aaaanyway…here are a few more movies coming soon to a theater near you!

First up, Despicable Me. It features the voices of Steve Carell, Jason Segal, and Jack McBrayer. Need I say more? Catch it on July 9th:
.
.

.
.
Next up, it’s The Last Airbender. In case you didn’t know, it’s based on the super popular Nickelodeon show, which we have here, at the library, called Avatar: The Last Airbender (but…you know…someone had already used that first word.) It hit’s theaters on July 2nd:
.
.

.
.
Last—but OMG not least—it’s a new teaser trailer that was released less than a week ago. It’s the first look at Part I of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I won’t lie, Bits and Bramblers. It’s the first trailer in a long time that made me wince, hold my breath, and made me want to see more (what can I say? I’m a Potter girl through and through!) We’ll have to wait a little longer for this one…it hits theaters on November 19th:

I Am So Totally Lost…

In less than a week, the Lost series finale will be over. It’s something a lot of people are looking forward to, but at the same time, sort of…dreading. But I’ll be honest with you, Bits and Bramblers…I’ve never really been a big fan of the show. Mostly because I’m the one asking all the questions, or making snarky comments.

Why is there a polar bear, if they crashed on a tropical island? I don’t think I’d really be scared of a giant smoke monster, do you? And do you really think a string of numbers causes bad luck? How are you not creeped out by “The Others”…and what does that even mean? Others…as opposed to what?! Why did Charlie have to die?! He was my favorite! Oh, so we’re time traveling now? How does that work without a Delorean? What the what are you talking about, there’s a “Sideways world?” So…these guys who write the show, they’re pretty much just making it up as they go along, right?

I guess you can tell, just by the number of questions, that I’m no “Lostie.” Because every gigantic fan I’ve talked is absolutely sure that it’s all going to work out. That with these final episodes, every question will be answered, everything will make sense, and everything will end up exactly the way it should be (something about how it’s all part of Jacob’s plan, yadayadayada.) Me? I’m not so sure…I’ll believe it when I see it (and even then, I’m probably still going to make snarky comments about it.) But I will give you Lost fans this…I don’t think I’ve ever seen another TV show like it. And I’m not sure they’ll be anything close to it again.

So if you’re looking forward to, but at the same time, sort of…dreading the end of Lost, remember…we have the first five seasons here at the library (and if you’re feeling brave and don’t want to…you know…sleep, you can try and watch them all by next Sunday.) If you’d rather not (re)watch, though, you could always “study up” at Lostpedia. And to kill time before the final episode tomorrow night (and the finale next Sunday,) you can watch one of the final promos (which is set to some pretty awesome music,) again and again for clues. Go ahead, you know you want to…and I won’t judge. I’ll merely roll my eyes snarkily…

Drop Everything! READ!

Hey, Bits and Bramblers…did you read the Beverly Cleary’s books when you were growing up? You know…books like Ramona Quimby, Age 8, and Beezus and Ramona? Yeah…me too.

So…do you remember that in school, one of Ramona’s favorite things was D.E.A.R? Which stands for Drop Everything and Read? Yeah, that was one of the reasons I liked her so much, too. Well…in honor of Beverly Cleary’s birthday, today is NATIONAL DROP EVERYTHING AND READ DAY!

Now…since you’re reading THIS, you’re already ahead of the curve. In fact, I almost feel bad sharing this trailer with you, for the new movie, Ramona and Beezus. Still, it looks pretty awesome. So check it out…
.
.

.
.
Okay…now…get reading! It doesn’t matter what you read, so long as you do it (in fact…why not pick up a Ramona book, for old times sake? Remember when Ramona and Howie were playing with boats in Howie’s basement and they spilled bluing everywhere? Yeah, it’s still funny.) Aaaanyway, what are you waiting for? DROP EVERYTHING AND READ!

Ahhhh, the TV Theme Song…

…They just don’t make them the way they used to, Bits and Bramblers. I hate to sound all grumpy and (*gulp*) old, but some TV shows don’t even have theme songs anymore! I just think it’s sad, especially when you think about some of those classic TV themes.

And so many shows could benefit from a theme song–like Lost. Now, I’m not a huge fan of the show, and maybe part of it’s ’cause their theme song is so lame. Stuck on an island? Come on…there’s so much you could do with that!

That’s why I lovelovelove this video. I mean, this guy gets what I’m talking about. He’s made. of. awesome. What are you waiting for? Watch now, and sing along with all your favorites!

Vampires: Save ‘Em or Slay ‘Em?

Did you know vampires are kind of popular? And did you know that I was being sarcastic, just then, with that last sentence? Because whether they’re sparkly, they wear special rings, or they’re just run-of-the-mill, can-only-come-out-at-night vampires, they’re everywhere. And maybe people are starting to get a little tired of them.

Which might explain why there are so many new books about people who really don’t like vampires. I mean…there’s Buffy, the ultimate vampire slayer, with her graphic novels and classic TV show. And now there are some new vampire killers you might not have expected—like Pinnochio: Vampire Slayer (after all, the more he lies? The longer the stake,) and…well…Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (…what? You didn’t learn about that in elementary school?)

So…what do you think, Bits and Bramblers? Are you a big fan of vampires…or would you rather stake them? Personally, I think it all depends on the vampire. I mean, there are some vampires I like very, very much…and others? Well…I wouldn’t really be opposed to someone staking them, I guess.

Now…speaking of vampire slayers…have you ever wondered what it might be like if Buffy Summers met Edward Cullen? Well, you don’t have to wonder anymore! Check out this made-of-awesome, classic mashup!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: THE MOVIE!

Okay, okay…I know we just posted a bunch of super-cool movie trailers (coming soon to a theater near you!) And to be honest, I was reeeaaalllly hoping to post this one then, but it wasn’t out just yet. But it is now! It’s the trailer for the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid MOVIE!

Now…whenever they make a book you really like into a movie, it’s sort of a mixed bag. Some of the characters look perfect, while others don’t look anything like you pictured them, right? Well…with this movie, it’s really interesting to see who’s playing the characters, because we’re used to them being…er…pencil drawings. So what will it look like, when the pencil drawings are…people?!

The answer? Awesome. Check out the trailer for yourself…and if you like what you see, you can see it on the big screen starting April 2nd!
