Grab Your Popcorn: Summer Blockbuster Edition

It’s (un)officially summer, Bits and Bramblers. And what’s better than spending a sweltering summer afternoon in an air-conditioned theater, watching an awesome movie with a cold drink, and buttery popcorn? Almost nothing. The answer is “almost nothing.” So check out these movies coming soon to a theater near you!

.
First up, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Now…if this movie is half as awesome as Seth Grahame-Smith’s book, this movie will be a whole lot of axe-wielding, vampire-killing awesome. Find out when it hits theaters on June 22nd:
.
.
.

.
.
Next up, it’s The Amazing Spiderman. Look, I know it seems a little…er…strange, making a new Spiderman movie with an entirely new cast, but…the thing is? Spiderman will always be cool. The crazy stunts in this trailer prove it will be pretty…well, amazing. Get caught in the web when it opens July 3rd:
.
.

.
.
Last but not least, it’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days. Poor Greg Haffley. Such miserable things happen to him, but…well, they’re just so fun to watch.See for yourself when the movie opens on August 3rd:

Watch This Now: Doctor Who

Ahhhh, winter. The snowy windy days get old quick…don’t they, Bits and Bramblers? Still, there’s an upside. When it’s cold and icky oustside, that makes it the perfect weather to wear PJs all day, curl up on the couch with some snacks, and watch some DVDs that you checked out from your faaaaaaavorite library.

And if you’re looking for a good TV show to watch…haaaaaave you tried Doctor Who? The show is sort of legendary, considering that it’s been on and off the air in the United Kingdom for nearly fifty years. So…how great is this show? Seriously…I don’t even like SciFi all that much, and I’m trying to come up with actual words to describe it’s complete and total awesomeness.

But you know what the coolest part is? I would never have watched the show if a few of your faaaaaavorite librarians hadn’t recommended it. I was all, “Yeah…I don’t know if it’s really my kind of thing,” but they wouldn’t give up until I’d tried it. So when I showed up a few days later blubbering, “TARDIS! Daleks! Sonic Screwdriver! WEEPING ANGELS!” They fully understood.

And now it’s your turn…head to your faaaaaaavorite library, and check out Doctor Who. Even though the show started back in the sixties, I recommend starting with Series One of the latest “reboot,” and sticking around for Series Five, and the Eleventh Doctor, who’s my personal favorite (What can I say? Bow ties are cool.) Seriously…check out the show, and WATCH IT NOW.

…After all, if you love it? You can always talk about the show with your faaaaavorite librarians.

Grab Your Popcorn: “Winter” Edition

It’s winter, Bits and Bramblers! Kind of, anyway. I mean…we may not have a lot of snow and subzero temperatures (hurrah!) but the days are still short, and you have to wear a coat. So…in my opinion? Perfect movie watching weather. Take a look at these movies, which are coming soon to a theater near you!

First up, Big Miracle. The movie, about three whales trapped behind solid sheets of ice in Alaska, is based on a true story. It stars Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski, and you can catch it February 3rd:
.
.
.

.
.
Next up, it’s The Lorax. Honestly…who wouldn’t love a movie based on an awesome Dr. Seuss book you loved as a kid? Especially when you’ve got people like Ed Helms and Zack Efron doing the voices? You can catch this one when it opens March 2nd:
.
.

.
.
Last but not least, it’s Mirror Mirror. The Evil Queen is played by Julia Roberts! In my opinion, you should avoid apples and stick to snacking on popcorn when this movie opens March 16th:

The Hunger Games: I Get It Now!

Okay, so a couple weeks ago, I posted the the trailer for reading The Hunger Games movie, and admitted that I…er…hadn’tactuallyreadthemoranything.

A lot can change in a couple weeks though, and now I’ve read my way through the trilogy. And yes, once I got past the first few chapters, I NEEDED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED AND I DIDN’T CARE ABOUT STUPID THINGS LIKE WORK OR SLEEP, ONLY WHAT HAPPENED IN THE BOOK. Now I know my districts from my tributes, and I quickly found a favorite character (other than Katniss, of course. What can I say? I love Peeta. Sue me,) and I have to admit, all I can say is…wow. I mean, just…wow. You Hunger Games fans weren’t kidding, were you?

And now I’m totally excited for the new movie…I mean, I was excited when I had absolutely no idea what was going on, but now that I know the story? I can’t wait. I’ve started playing what if, like you do when a book you love gets turned into a movie—what will Cinna’s “Girl on Fire” dress look like? How creepy is the arena going to be? And will we see Peeta and Katniss in the cave (please? please?!)

Luckily, we have this handy dandy OMG SO AWESOME countdown widget to tell us EXACTLY how much time we have left. Okay, fellow Hunger Games fans (’cause I’m so totally one of you now,) what do you want to see in the movie?!
.
.

ZOMG, HAVE YOU SEEN THIS?!

…Seriously, you should really see this.

But before you do, I have a quick admission to make, Bits and Bramblers. See, I’ve written some posts about The Hunger Games before. I’ve talked to tons of librarians and a lot of you who lovelovelovelovelove the series, and they all want to talk to me about it, kind of…automatically assuming that I’ve read it, too.

Which…I…er…haven’t. Okay, here’s the thing. I started reading The Hunger Games, and I totally finished the first few chapters. It’s just that…it didn’t suck me in, you know? It wasn’t the kind of book I had to KEEP READING because I NEEDED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED AND I DIDN’T CARE ABOUT STUPID THINGS LIKE WORK OR SLEEP, ONLY WHAT HAPPENED IN THE BOOK. Also, a lot of you were waiting to read or re-read it, so I couldn’t renew it, and I just…you know…never picked it back up. So I’ve totally been…well “lying” is kind of harsh. Let’s just say I’ve been “faking enthusiasm” for a book series I’ve never read.

And then I saw this. OMG, HAVE YOU SEEN THIS? YOU HAVE TO SEE!
.
.

.
.
Is this what I’ve been missing?! Is this why you all love it so much?! I was practically biting my nails for Katniss, and I don’t even really understand what’s going on! So…guess what, Bits and Bramblers? Looks like I’m giving The Hunger Games one more try.

So…are you a big Hunger Games fan? Be honest…what am I getting myself into?! Should I be prepared for anything? I heard that a bunch of characters called “tributes” die, is that true? Should I have Kleenex on hand when I read? And more importantly…what do you think of the trailer?!

Grab Your Popcorn: Fall Edition

…At least, I think it’s fall. It’s sort of hard to tell, what with the 80 degree weather.

Not that I’m complaining, really, Bits and Bramblers. I mean, in a few months, I’ll definitely be complaining about how cold it is. Okay, so now that I’ve depressed you all with wacky Ohio weather ramblings, let’s cheer ourselves up by seeing what awesome movies are coming soon to a theater near you

First off, Footloose. Now, this is a remake of the classic 1984 film, so definitely check it out (literally! We have it here at your library!) before the new movie opens on October 14th:
.
.
.

.
.
.
Next up, it’s Breaking Dawn, Part One. Have you heard of this movie? (<---sarcasm) Apparently, it’s kind of popular (<---more sarcasm.) See Edward and Bella’s wedding on screen, and get ready for a surprise (<---even more sarcasm) ending on November 18th:
.
.
.

.
.
.
And finally, the movie I’m most excited about, The Muppets. It’s…it’s the Muppets! It’s the Muppets with Jason Segal! I mean…it’s time to play the music! What’s not to love?! Be there when they get things started (get it?!) on November 25th:

Grab Your Popcorn: Summer Blockbuster Edition

So, like I was saying yesterday…ahhhhh, summer. The nights are long, and the days are perfect for soaking up rays and reading (and reading to win prizes!) But sometimes soaking up rays is a little…less than fun. Especially if you’re sunburned. Or it’s crazy humid outside, like it’s been most of this week. In that case, it’s perfect time to go to an air conditioned theater near you, sip some soda, grab some popcorn, and watch the biggest summer blockbusters.

Like Super 8. It’s all about a group of friends—growing up in Ohio!—who love to make movies. Only…one movie goes wrong when there’s a big train crash, and a…thing escapes. An alien? A monster? It’s by some of the people who brought us Cloverfield, so…who knows? The movie opens today, so you can find out! (And then tell me. I want to know what’s in the train.)
.
.

.
.
Next up, Transformers 3: Dark Side of the Moon. Space! Big Robots! Bigger Explosions! Military Guys looking concerned! And that kid from Even Stevens has a gun! Exclamation Points!! Go see it July 1st!
.
.

.
.
And last but most definitely not least, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Look, this is…this is the last Harry Potter movie. If you’re a fan, you know what happens, and you can’t wait to see it on screen, even if you have to watch through your fingers. And if you’re not a fan, then…er…what’s wrong with you, exactly!? How can you watch this trailer and not want to see this movie at least four times?! In 3-D?! It opens July 15th, so start counting down now…

Grab Your Popcorn: *MORE* Movies Based on Books!

…Ugh. It’s definitely winter, Bits and Bramblers. With the freezing cold and the snow and the ice…where can you go to escape it all? Well…how about a theater near you? That’s where these movies will be playing soon!

First off, The Green Hornet, starring Seth Rogen. Now, here’s some trivia for you, Bits and Bramblers: The Green Hornet actually started as a radio show back in the 1930s, which spawned a comic book series. Also it was a TV show that starred—seriously—Bruce Lee. Impress your friends with your knowledge when you go to see the movie, which opens Friday, January 14th:
.
.

.
.
Next, Beastly. The movie’s based on the book by Alex Flinn. We’ve been waiting awhile for this movie—it was supposed to be released over the summer, but the release date was pushed back a little. You can catch this modern take on Beauty and the Beast when it hits theaters on March 18th. It stars Vanessa Hudgens, Alex Pettyfer, and…Neil Patrick Harris! As Will, the tutor! (So…if NPH was your tutor…do you think he’d show you how to build a Freeze Ray?! Kidding, kidding…)
.
.

.
.
Last but not least, it’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. I’ve said it before, Bits and Bramblers, it’s not easy turning stick figures into real people…but the first movie was so much awesome, and this one looks exactly the same way. Which is fun for us, but not so much for poor Greg. Catch it on March 25th:

Grab Your Popcorn: For National Popcorn Poppin’ Month!

Okay Bits and Bramblers, we’ve already discussed the fact that it’s National Popcorn Poppin’ Month. So what better way to celebrate it than snacking on some popcorn, adding extra butter (because those pump thingies are seriously awesome, right?!) and watching these movies that are headed to a theater near you.

First up, It’s Kind of a Funny Story. The movie’s based on a made-of-awesome book by Ned Vizzini. Catch it today, October 8th:

Next up, Megamind. Aliens with giant brains! Superheroes vs. Supervillians! Will Ferrell! Tina Fey! Brad Pitt! All in 3-D! Grab your glasses, and catch it on November 5th:

Last but not least, we’re getting closer and closer to the penultimate (seriously, look it up. Use it in a sentence today! Impress your friends!) Harry Potter movie! Thaaaat’s right, on November 19th, you can catch Part I of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows! (Are you excited? I’m a little excited…)

Garrr…

…We missed Talk Like a Pirate Day! Awwwww, man…how did that happen?

I guess it’s because your faaaaaaavorite librarians have all been working pretty hard on our shiny new website, which we just debuted this week (haaaaave you visited mrcpl.org lately? If not, take a look around…and let us know what you think!)

Anyway, it’s possible that we were working on the last minute details and completely forgot to talk like a pirate. Even though it would have been waaaaaaay more fun to talk like a pirate while drinking lots of caffeine and working on the website (“Hey Matey! I do nay be seein’ th’ image on this page!” See? How is that not more fun?)

But really, why can’t EVERY day be talk like a pirate day? I mean, that’s how my favorite pirate of all time does it—Steve the Pirate, from the cinematic classic Dodgeball: A True Underdog’s Story. So even if you did celebrate “Speak Like a Seafarin’ Hearty Tide,” feel free to do it again today—or any day! You can even look at the library’s website (did I mention it’s shiny? And new?) and tell us what you think of it, in Pirate Speak! Use Steve as inspiration!
