Allmusic, All The Time…

I’m one of those girls, Bits and Bramblers. One of those girls that has waaaay too many CDs, along with an iPod that holds a ridiculous number of songs. I’m one of those girls who burns CDs for special occasions, and says things like, “What do you mean you’ve never heard of Vampire Weekend? Never mind, I’ll burn you a mix CD.” That’s right…I’m an all-out music junkie.

Which is why allmusic is maybe one of the best websites ever. It’s got everything. On the front page? Music news. New Releases. An album of the day! But you’ll find the best stuff when you search for your favorite singer and/or band. Then you’ll get a biography, a discography (every album, and they year it was released,) along with a list of all their songs (complete with sound clips!)

Best of all, the site also gives you recommendations. For example…now that I’ve got you interested in Vampire Weekend? Allmusic says you might want to check out Ra Ra Riot (and they’re right…you totally should, that band is made of awesome.) What’s that? You’ve never heard of them? Never mind…now you can look them up on allmusic. And being an all-out music junkie, I’ll leave you with one of their music videos. Enjoy…and rock on, Bits and Bramblers!

I Am So Totally Lost…

In less than a week, the Lost series finale will be over. It’s something a lot of people are looking forward to, but at the same time, sort of…dreading. But I’ll be honest with you, Bits and Bramblers…I’ve never really been a big fan of the show. Mostly because I’m the one asking all the questions, or making snarky comments.

Why is there a polar bear, if they crashed on a tropical island? I don’t think I’d really be scared of a giant smoke monster, do you? And do you really think a string of numbers causes bad luck? How are you not creeped out by “The Others”…and what does that even mean? Others…as opposed to what?! Why did Charlie have to die?! He was my favorite! Oh, so we’re time traveling now? How does that work without a Delorean? What the what are you talking about, there’s a “Sideways world?” So…these guys who write the show, they’re pretty much just making it up as they go along, right?

I guess you can tell, just by the number of questions, that I’m no “Lostie.” Because every gigantic fan I’ve talked is absolutely sure that it’s all going to work out. That with these final episodes, every question will be answered, everything will make sense, and everything will end up exactly the way it should be (something about how it’s all part of Jacob’s plan, yadayadayada.) Me? I’m not so sure…I’ll believe it when I see it (and even then, I’m probably still going to make snarky comments about it.) But I will give you Lost fans this…I don’t think I’ve ever seen another TV show like it. And I’m not sure they’ll be anything close to it again.

So if you’re looking forward to, but at the same time, sort of…dreading the end of Lost, remember…we have the first five seasons here at the library (and if you’re feeling brave and don’t want to…you know…sleep, you can try and watch them all by next Sunday.) If you’d rather not (re)watch, though, you could always “study up” at Lostpedia. And to kill time before the final episode tomorrow night (and the finale next Sunday,) you can watch one of the final promos (which is set to some pretty awesome music,) again and again for clues. Go ahead, you know you want to…and I won’t judge. I’ll merely roll my eyes snarkily…

Mother’s Day 2010: What Are You Getting YOUR Mom?!

Spring is in the air, Bits and Bramblers…and it’s about time! (Remember when I said that our “freezing rain” days would be behind us eventually? Well…it’s finally eventually!) So now I’ll talk about one of those massively important spring holidays: Mother’s Day.

Remember when you were in elementary school? Crafts for Mother’s Day was soooo easy. You’d dip your tiny hands in some ink or some clay, press them on or into something, then paste on a little poem about how your hands wouldn’t always be so tiny, and bam. Mother’s Day Gift. Now, though…it’s not so simple, is it? And also…you know…gifts cost money, and everything.

But never fear…your faaaaavorite librarians are here to help! For starters, what Mom wouldn’t love a spa day? Especially since you can make everything from bubble bath to lip gloss with stuff that’s already lying around your house! We’ve got tons of books on how to do it…and, of course, there are a lot of awesome websites that will walk you through how to make things like oatmeal foot scrubs (I’m sure they feel better than they sound.)

Or how about making your Mom a collage? You could use old magazines lying around, or even family pictures. And if you’d rather not mess with all the scissors and glue, you could create a digital collage using pictures on your computer, using totally free–and made of awesome–photo editing websites like Picnik!

Or, you could think totally out of the box, and break out the dominoes, like this insanely awesome YouTube video:

Okay guys, you’ve got a few days before Mother’s Day…so get busy Bits and Bramblers, and show your Mom how much she means to you!
